Crazy Crazing

I have such a weakness for faults; if it is chipped and broken I undoubtedly will love it. However, if it is crazed then that is just another story!
Crazing is generally a fault that occurs in old glazed ceramics. Over time the elements such as heat cause crazing, which has a similar pattern to the Arctic ice floor melting or spider webs – lots of graphic lines and milky patterns.
Keep an eye out for crazed ware!

This happens to glazed pieces that were used (not kept in the cupboard) – especially if they are 19th Century/early 20th Century pieces. Dirt, grease, fat, moisture all seep under the deteriorating glaze coat which over time reveals that graphic pattern of the cracking of the thin layer. Love it!
Wow – I had no idea. Does that mean the more used the items was the more crazing it is likely to have?

I got a couple of beautiful pale green bowls at a car boot sale the other day, they came with some fab crazing at 20p a bowl. One (or two) of my top finds!
